WE'RE THERE BECAUSE WE CARE!
My name is Mary Kraft. I was diagnosed with Hep C in January 1999. I was notified in a letter from the local blood bank. I believe I contracted the virus from emergency surgery in 1988.
I have been one of the lucky ones. I have not had to undergo treatment since my liver function tests have remained normal for the past ten years. I have had three liver biopsies which show stage 0. My doctor continues to check my LFT's every six months.
My physician started this support group in July of 1999 and I took over as the group facilitator three months later. My background in Social Work has enabled me to successfully continue to lead the group for ten years. We are the only Hep C support group in Brevard County at this time. I continue to work to educate our community about the importance of awareness by speaking at the local high school. Also, I have organized rallies to promote awareness of the plight of the uninsured who have this virus.
With the help of the community I hope to continue to provide the residents of Brevard County with the support they need when faced with the uncertainty of a chronic illness.
