My name is Mary Kraft. I was diagnosed with Hep C in January 1999. I was notified in a letter from the local blood bank. I believe I contracted the virus from emergency surgery in 1988.
I have been one of the lucky ones. I have not had to undergo treatment as my liver function tests have remained normal for the past seven years. I have had two liver biopsies which show stage 0. My doctor continues to check my LFT's every six months.
My physician started this support group in July of 1999 and I took over as the group facilitator 3 months later. My background in Social Work has enabled me to successfully continue to lead the group for seven years. We are the only Hep C group in Brevard County. I continue to work to educate our community about the importance of awareness by speaking at the local high school. Also, I have organized rallies to promote awareness of the plight of the uninsured who have the disease.
